Compatible
MP3 player (
see
list here) and/or
CD-RW drive and blank audio CDs. (Not all titles can be burned to CD.)
We are happy to announce that the NH
Downloadable Audiobooks Consortium
is now able to purchase MP3 audiobooks! MP3 audiobooks contain
no DRM
(Digital Rights Management) and are compatible with any music player,
including iPods and Mac computers.
Up until this point, our current
collection of digital audiobooks contains approximately 2400 unique
titles in WMA (Windows Media Audio) format. These titles cannot be
played on iPods or Mac computers. Only
the MP3 titles
will be compatible with iPods and Macs.
Mac
users will need to download a
Mac-compatible version of the OverDrive Media Console prior to using
the service and will only be able to checkout MP3 audiobook titles.
At this point of time, not all
publishers provide their content in MP3 format. The Consortium will
still purchase much of its content in WMA format, but if there is a
choice between the two formats for any given title, the MP3 format will
be purchased.
Getting Started
You may wish to review
the
Quick
Start Guide
to using OverDrive Media Console and/or take the
Digital
Media Guided Tour. Before you can
download audio books, you will need to download and
install the OverDrive Media Console and perform a one-time-only
security upgrade to Windows Media Player. Users of Apple
devices (iPod, etc.) will need to enable the "manually manage music"
setting on your device.
When you're
ready to search for a book to download, go to
nh.lib.overdrive.com.
You can browse by subject or collection, or search by title, author, or
keyword. Clicking on a title or book cover will show you
information about the title: author, reader, copies available, length,
description, and the Digital Rights Information for the title. A
sample excerpt can be heard as well. You can add up to 5 titles
to your shopping cart; they will be held there for 60 minutes.
You can also place a hold on any title that is currently
unavailable.
You may check
out up to 3 audio books at a time. When you are
ready to check out, click on the "Proceed to Checkout" link in your
cart. You will be asked to sign in: select Dunbarton Public
Library from the drop down list of libraries.
You will need to
add a prefix to your library card number: 4419xxx, where xxx is your
three digit card number. Follow the onscreen directions to
checkout your chosen title(s) and to download to your computer.
Titles are checked out for 7 days, and are "returned" automatically at
the end of the lending period. (NO LATE FEES!!!) To renew a
title, add it to your cart and checkout. You will need to
download the rights again, but not the audio files you have previously
downloaded. You are responsible for deleting/destroying any and
all copies of the title in your possession at the end of the lending
period.
You can build a "Wish List" to remind you of titles you'd like to
listen to at a later date, and rate titles you've downloaded.
NOTE: You will
need to be connected to the Internet to transfer your
title to a portable MP3 player, but you can listen to it on your
computer without a connection.
